Helping Pink Cockatoo Get Used to Me!

Learn how I am helping this Major Mitchell's Cockatoo get used to me. As he is settling in, I just spend time around him. I don't go sticking my hands up to him, in his cage, or make him come out. Instead, I let him observe me.

First and foremost, I want him to get used to his enclosure: the location of his food and water, how to get around, the perches, and the toys. I also want to start developing a daily routine where he knows when to expect me to spend time with him, when to eat, when to sleep, etc. As he settles in, I'm also spending more time calmly around him. I let him do more observing of me than me of him. I look away and let him feel safe that I'm not even paying attention to him. As he gets more comfortable that I'm not coming after him or doing anything uncomfortable, I start looking his way more and interacting hands-off from outside the cage.
