Quaker Parrot Learning to Step Up On My Hand

Here is how I teach my Quaker Parrot to Step Up on my hand. I use treats, a clicker, a target stick, and a handheld perch to have him come out of the cage voluntarily and to teach him to step up on my hand.

I direct the Quaker Parrot where I want him to go by having him follow the target stick. Initially I use this to direct him to step onto a perch that I'm holding to take him out of the cage and onto the training perch. Training really starts to take off once I'm able to train him on a dedicated Training Perch rather than in the cage.

Without the distractions and confinement of the cage, I can quickly proceed from having him step on a perch to my hand when training him out on a training perch. The Monk Parakeet follows the target stick right up onto my finger. He's a bit hesitant at first and only steps with one foot. But, with a little more practice, the Quaker Parrot is full stepping up onto my finger.

No biting! He doesn't bite because he wants to be there. We are using positive reinforcement and a training methodology so we could be friends and he wouldn't bite.
